  NOVA tonight on pbs. The Bible's Burried Secrets....

  scholars and researches discuss the old testament and how the concept of one god emerged....but way more than that...lots of archeology that just does not match up with the first five books of the bilble....and a good bit about the name of the god of the jews...and they read it yahweh every time and feel that may be close to how it was said...(good thing i have it on dvr cause the other dvr took over so i could tape the unc kentucky game!)...

  one very interesting thing was that there was a god named yhw (pronounced yahoo...hahah) in a nearby land and that was the name of their god...and there could have been some crossover ideas between them and the jews....i will finish watching it later but bet they never even mention the name jehovah........oompa.

  since no one bothered to read in my last thread how secular societies have lower rates of violence and teenage pregnancy than societies where many people profess belief in god.

  i figured i'd give those among us who are religious the benefit of the doubt that the post was lost in the haze of the argument.

  so, i thought i'd post it again here.

  i dont see what needs to be explained. religion has killed more people in the course of human civilization than atheism.

  religion has been used to dehumanize opponents. so has atheism.

  religion has been used to justify horrible crimes. so has atheism.

  two differences.

  religion has been at it for a lot longer.

  and those crimes commited by atheists were not done in the name of atheism, more like a political expediency.

  i guess any philosophy can be turned to evil ends, its just that religion has the distinction of having that done to it longer and with greater severity than atheism.
